Crush Distractions and Create Boundaries That Actually Help You Scale Your Business

Jun 30, 2025

Ever sit down to work on your business only to be interrupted by a ping, a knock, or the sudden urge to check your email… again?
Before you know it, 20 minutes have passed, and you’ve lost your flow — and with it, potential income.

Now, don’t get me wrong — some distractions are those cute little faces our kids flash when they want attention. We love those moments. But this is about the work time you carve out when they’re actually occupied — at school, with a sitter, or asleep. Because those minutes? They’re gold, and you deserve to protect them.

Distractions aren’t just frustrating; for entrepreneurs building something real, they’re revenue thieves. The more you chase pings, the more your freedom and your dream slip through your fingers.

But here’s the good news:
You don’t have to live at the mercy of notifications or chaos. With a few strategic boundaries, you can protect your time and get serious work done — even with kids, a partner, and a million things on your plate.

Set Digital Boundaries: Stop the Ping-Pong of Notifications

We live in a world of constant notifications — texts, emails, app alerts, social media pings. It’s like your phone is throwing a party and forgot to invite you. 😆

Here’s how to take control:

  • Turn on Do Not Disturb Mode: When you’re working, activate “Do Not Disturb” on your phone and computer.

  • Limit App Notifications: Disable non-essential app alerts in your settings. You can still catch up later—on your terms.

  • Schedule Specific Check-In Times: Instead of reacting to every ping, pick two or three times a day to check email and socials.

Pro Tip: Use apps like Freedom or Focus@Will to block distractions and dive deep into your work.

Create Physical Boundaries: Your Workspace Should Work for You

If your workspace is the kitchen table covered in last night’s dishes, I get it — but it’s not productivity-friendly. Physical clutter creates mental clutter.

Try this:

  • Dedicated Workspace: Set up a corner just for work. (Check out my blog post on creating a productive workspace even without a home office!)

  • Clear the Clutter: Spend 5 minutes before work clearing your space — your brain will thank you.

  • Visual Cues for Focus: Add a plant, candle, or a “Do Not Disturb” sign if you share your space.

When your environment signals “work mode,” it’s easier to get in the zone.

Time Blocking: Make Room for Focused Work

Focus doesn’t just happen—you have to make room for it. Time blocking is your best friend here.

Ask yourself:

  • When are you most focused? Early morning? After kids’ bedtime?

  • Can you schedule with your partner for uninterrupted work time? Maybe a few hours every other weekend?

Example time block schedule:

  • 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Focused work (no distractions)

  • 10:00 AM – 10:15 AM: Break & check notifications

  • 10:15 AM – 12:00 PM: More focused work

Adjust to fit your life — nap time, after bedtime, or those precious quiet moments.

Communicate Your Boundaries

Sometimes, the biggest distractions aren’t digital or physical — they’re people. Family, friends, partners.

Set gentle, clear boundaries like:

  • “I’m working on something important right now. Can I get back to you in an hour?”

  • “I have a work block until 3 PM, but I’d love to chat after!”

The clearer you are, the more respect your work time gets.

Make It a Habit

Boundaries don’t work if you set them once and forget them. Make these habits part of your routine:

  • Turn on Do Not Disturb before every work session

  • Clear your workspace before you start

  • Stick to your scheduled focus blocks

The more you practice, the easier it gets — and the more productive you’ll be.

Building a business alongside a busy life is no small feat. Every distraction you block is more time to build your dream — and more money and freedom in your future.
